More about your Instructor, Elaina Garcia

I was born in SLC, Utah where at 14 years old I became a Junior Open Water Scuba Diver! Taking that course opened my eyes to a lifetime of learning on and around the water. I traveled to Sydney Australia to earn my PADI Divemaster Certification before moving to Avalon, California on Catalina Island! After a few years of working in the scuba industry, I earned my PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor Certification which was quickly followed by the Master Scuba Diver Trainer upgrade.
From there, I still felt something was missing in my world, and it was a little bit of whimsy.
So, when PADI announced the PADI Mermaid Program in 2020 I knew it was for me. I patiently waited for the first classes to come out, and I took them as soon as they were available to me. In the meantime, I founded Catalina Island Mermaids and began offering Mermaid Photoshoots on the island.
During my PADI Advanced Mermaid Class in October of 2022, a scuba diver was in distress, and I was close enough to swim to his rescue. The “Mermaid Saving the Scuba Diver” made world wide news, and really put my business on the map. I quickly followed up to become a PADI Mermaid Instructor and was soon invited by PADI to attend the Mermaid Instructor Trainer Class at PADI Headquarters. That week I learned so much, and it definitely made me a mermaid for life!
Catalina Island Mermaids is still operating in Avalon, offering mermaid photoshoots and PADI Mermaid Classes while I expand and start our second location… Louisiana Mermaids!
Why Louisiana Mermaids? I am moving to be closer to my Mom as I start my family and raise my future kid(s). I visited my extended family in Woodworth every Christmas and every summer growing up, and my Mom moved there a few years ago to be closer to her sister. As I get older, I value being close to family more and more.
Thanks for joining me on my life-long journey as a professional mermaid! Let’s make waves together. I have built my life around being a mermaid, and I can show you how to do that too. Real job? Never.
Making waves in the news for rescuing a scuba diver…
